In memory of Bill Hairrell, Gause ISD annually recognizes the athlete(s) who have demonstrated leadership, courage, determination, and superior sportsmanship. Like Mr. Bill, this athlete always encourages teammates to excel and demonstrate a positive work ethic.
The Bill Hairrell Award is the highest honor earned annually, and it recognizes the top Gause ISD student-athlete who has demonstrated leadership, courage, determination, and superior sportsmanship. Like Mr. Hairrell, this athlete always encourages teammates to excel and demonstrate a positive work ethic. When choosing a recipient of this award, three areas in a student’s life are considered: athletics, academics, and citizenship. This person goes above and beyond what is expected on and off the field or court.
The Bill Hairrell Award recognizes the most outstanding athlete whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Good athletes are driven to improve every day and must be competitive, aggressive, self-confident, and have self-discipline. This self-discipline is evident in all areas of a student’s life. In addition to athletic talent, this award considers the academics of each student. The student must demonstrate the traits required for being a good student, such as commitment and taking responsibility for their learning. This student is in class on time, turns in assignments on time, and asks for help when needed.
The third criterion is citizenship. Citizenship shows the true nature of a student. This is the way the student acts when adults are not watching. This is how the student treats others, and the reputation that the student earns among their peers. The Bill Hairrell Award’s mission is to ensure the continuation and integrity of this award. The winners of this award epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. We take great pride, and we feel an enormous responsibility in choosing the students who have the most outstanding whole performance as an athlete, student, and citizen.
